The Long Drive

By June 27, 2014 Places, Travel

Today was a travel day. A long one. Five hundred fifty two miles to be exact, and that doesn’t include the miscellaneous turn-arounds we had to do through some construction zones and missed exits.

We drove from Bend north to Biggs, Oregon, along the Columbia River, thru the Tri-Cities area (Richland, Pasco and Kennewick) in Washington, to Spokane, to Coeur d’Alene, Idaho before landing for the night in Alberton, Montana. The terrain changes during that drive were significant and made the drive, mostly large four-lane interstate freeways, interesting enough to prompt many geological, economic and agricultural discussions. Although we hustled through this day on a quest to get closer to Glacier NP, the drive was quite lovely

A fuel stop in Kennewick provided a natural opportunity for “lunch” around 3:30p. We parked the coach in a limestone chat-covered lot and ate fast food and PB&Js before heading out again.  When you’re this far north, the sun sets very late, so we had until ten something to find an RV park and get set up before losing the light. We didn’t have a specific destination in mind which meant no RV park reservation lined up. So, Angela worked from Spokane onward to find a place where we could land for the evening. The place – the River Edge Resort, a motel slash casino slash RV park in Alberton, Montana – had one last spot open. By the time we’d arrived, it was nearly midnight.
